meet the doulas

All of our doulas are hand-picked and mentored by Heart Tones Birth Services’ owner, Beth Hardy. When bringing doulas onto our team, we look for doulas who are down-to-earth, passionate about supporting all types of families, skilled in labor support techniques, and able to connect deeply with their clients. If there’s a doula whose bio feels like a great fit for you, please ask to connect with them when you reach out to us. Otherwise, Beth will match you with one of our doulas and you can meet in a virtual or in-person consultation to get to know each other, ask questions, and see if it feels like a great fit.

Beth hardy (she/her), owner, birth doula + postpartum doula

Hey there, I’m Beth. I’m a birth doula, postpartum doula, childbirth educator with Birthsmarter, music therapist, and parent of two kids. I founded Heart Tones Birth Services in 2015 because I am fiercely passionate about helping birthing people know their options, tap into their strength, and rock their birth. I see a need for advocacy for underserved communities in the birth space, and am always looking to learn more about how I can be the best doula for my clients. I have additional training in Hypnobirthing, labor massage, Music Therapy Assisted Childbirth, providing culturally sensitive care to LGBTQ+ clients, Birthing at Every Size, and systemic racism & implicit bias in perinatal health. I also have training in supporting pregnancy loss and am honored to hold space for clients experiencing miscarriage and stillbirth. Outside of birth work I love cooking vegetarian food, walking around Sugarhouse park with my dog Griffin, and fixing up my vintage camper. You can learn more about my story here, and I can’t wait to meet you!

Our vision for our birth was a loving, consensual, empowered and educated experience with a team of caring, respectful birth workers. Having Beth as our doula was crucial to realizing that vision.

candace roper (she/her), postpartum doula, lactation consultant

Hi, I'm Candace. I'm a CAPPA (Childbirth and Postpartum Professional Association) certified postpartum doula and an IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant). I've worked with birthing families for 19 years and feel so lucky to love my work so dearly. I've been fascinated by all things pregnancy and birth since I was a teenager when I discovered Ina May Gaskin’s book, Spiritual Midwifery. Ever since then I knew I would work with birthing families.

Then, I had my own four children. Motherhood threw me for a loop, both in traumatic births and difficult postpartum periods. My work has since evolved into helping others to have the support they need in their journeys as parents.

I have additional training in hypnosis for birth, pregnancy and infant loss, supporting survivors of sexual abuse, and new parent education. I am always working on learning more so that I can better support the families I serve. I can’t wait to meet you!

Camille Freeman (she/her), birth + postpartum doula

Hi! I’m Camille Freeman. I’m a Doulas of North America (DONA) and Curtis Method trained hypnodoula, Death Companioning Initiate through the School of American Thanatology, and a Pure Barre Instructor. I have a passion for the emotionally complicated moments in people’s lives—birth, death, and anything that falls in between. When I gave birth to my two kids, I became acutely aware of how impactful and important it is to be allowed to make our own empowered choices, even if we’re in circumstances that we might not have planned on. I believe that we all deserve to be seen and supported, and that a “good birth” is about more than just a healthy baby—it’s about you going through your experience with the knowledge that you are strong enough and capable enough to face whatever comes. Working with real people through real life moments is something that fulfills me so deeply, and I truly believe that my clients can feel that when we’re together. Thank you for being here and considering me for a part in your journey—I can’t wait to meet you and see where we end up. Let’s go live.

When I had my baby, there were a lot of worries and fears that I had about birth. Having Camille there put me and my husband at ease. She helped me advocate for myself and make my wishes known to the hospital staff. I can say with 100% certainty, we wouldn’t have made it through the birth without her.”

Haley Critchfield (she/her), birth + postpartum doula

Hello! My name is Haley and I am a BADT (Birthing Advocacy Doula Training) certified Full Spectrum Doula. I am passionate about supporting all birthing bodies and I love being a steady presence and firm advocate for people throughout their pregnancy, labor, and postpartum experiences. As a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, I also focus on providing inclusive care for people of all sexes, gender identities, races, and beliefs.

I have always had an interest in the birth world, but for the first 20 years of my life, I was dedicated to pursuing my love for dance. I moved to Salt Lake City from Akron, Ohio in 2018 to get my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Ballet from the University of Utah. While I was studying for my degree, I started reading everything I could find about becoming a doula. My interest turned into an obsession and after dancing professionally for a year, I felt ready take a break from dance and pursue birth work full time! Heart Tones is such an inspiring and uplifting community and I love being a part of it. When I’m not working, I love to travel, golf, hike, dance, do yoga and spend time with my husband and our two cats. I would love to support you throughout our time together!

Isabelle Montgomery (she/her), birth doula

Hello! I'm Isabelle, I'm a DONA (Doulas of North America) doula and a certified VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean) doula. I was raised on a farm and I’m the oldest of seven children, so growing up I was always around birth and babies. My love for life and families grew when I got my degree in Marriage, Family, and Human Relations. I’ve always known that I wanted to work with families, and becoming a doula has been a way for me to tap into my desire to help families have autonomy and sacredness in their birth experiences. My work as a doula has forged the way for me to become a midwife, and I’m hoping to be finished with my certification in midwifery within the next couple of years.

My role as a doula is to help my clients move into the seat of the parent, making their own decisions based on their intuition and knowledge. I help my client’s have autonomy in their care by providing reliable informational resources for them to make their decisions from. As a doula I hold space for my client, and protect that space so that they can stay focused and in their element. I provide a grounding and calming energy to my clients, helping them feel safe and secure in whatever turns happen in their birth experience.

My husband and I are so incredibly grateful we found Isabelle! After a very traumatic birth experience with my first baby I knew I needed more support and preparation for my second baby’s birth. Isabelle provided all of that and more. Everything about this labor and delivery experience was everything I’d ever hoped it could be. I did get an epidural and even then Isabelle’s presence was still absolutely essential. I would recommend that anyone planning to have a medicated birth still hire Isabelle as their doula, she was right there with crucial medical knowledge and knew how to help me cope with the pain of getting an epidural and pushing my baby out while being numb. Her knowledge, expertise, and comforting presence resulted in my dream birth becoming a reality. Thank you, Isabelle!

Jamie Kowalk (she/her), birth + Postpartum doula

Hi! My name is Jamie and I’m a DONA (Doulas of North America) and Mongan Method trained Hypnobirthing doula, VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean) certified, and currently training to become a massage doula. I’m a mom to two amazing kids, ages 5 and 2, and love to go on bike rides, read, and play video games in my spare time.

My fascination and love for all things birth started when I became pregnant for the first time. After the birth of my second child, I came across birth doula work and knew instantly I had found what I was meant to do. And even though my own births didn’t go exactly as I had hoped, they were still hands-down two of the most fun and exciting experiences of my life. There’s nothing quite like the anticipation of meeting the tiny love(s) of your life. I’m so passionate about this work because every birthing person deserves respect, support, and choices in their birth and it is so fulfilling for me to help others have an empowering and positive birthing experience.

I also chose to train as a postpartum doula because of how sacred and yet challenging those first few months after birth can be. I truly wish that everyone could have the knowledge and support they need to make that transition to parenthood easier. None of us were ever meant to do this alone, and I feel honored anytime I get to be a part of someone’s “village.” I can’t wait to meet you and support you as you welcome your new baby!

As a first time parent, I read all the books and listened to all the podcasts I could get my hands on. But honestly, it was Jamie’s pre and postnatal visits, and all the wisdom and resources she bestowed on us at those, that were the most helpful in preparing both my husband and I for the birth and care of our newborn. I am so grateful that we had the good sense to hire her as our doula and will forever cherish the time we had with her.
— Rachel

Jen Unzaga (she/her), birth + postpartum doula

Hi I’m Jen, and I’m a DONA (Doulas of North America) trained birth and postpartum doula. My friends would describe me as intuitive and passionate. I love to spend my time outside of birthwork reading suspense novels, teaching myself to paint, and spending time with my family and my cats. I’m an introvert, but am always up for a conversation when it comes to birth (or cats!). My interest in doula work was sparked after my first birth, which was a textbook hospital birth. Despite having close family members there (and to no fault of their own), I felt unsupported and overall unfulfilled. As I learned more about the role of a doula I became passionate about offering the emotional, physical, and informational support that I so needed at my first birth. For my second birth I had a doula, and that support further instilled in me that being supported in birth will positively impact you and how you see yourself throughout your life.

My passion for supporting new parents during the postpartum time came about when I saw the lack of support our society offers new parents. I work hard to bring a sense of calm, groundedness, and knowledge to all of my postpartum clients. Whether I’m working a daytime shift or overnight, I just love knowing that I’m helping new parents to get some rest, allow their anxieties to settle a bit, and gain more confidence and skills as they ease into parenthood.

I am passionate about providing inclusive care for all families, and honoring who you are as a unique individual with your own unique preferences. The intuition of birthing people is powerful, especially during this time of creation. While some things may drown out that inner knowing, I work to empower you to trust that you are the expert on your body and baby in pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. Whatever your birth and postpartum plans are, I look forward to supporting you in your goals.

My birth experience with my youngest boy was unforgettable. Jen was there for all of my needs. She is intuitive and wants what you want. I loved inviting her into my sacred space. I wish I had Jen with my first baby! Once you have a doula, you’ll never go back.

Jorie-Brae Morgan (she/her), birth + postpartum doula

Hello there, I’m Jorie-Brae, a certified Birth Boot Camp doula. I work as a birth + postpartum doula and love every moment of it. At the young age of 15, I had the privilege of attending my first nephew's birth, an experience that ignited a deep-seated passion within me for supporting families during pregnancy and beyond. Once I experienced his birth I continued to attend the rest of my nephews + nieces births and took to being the friend or sister who sat with you in your postpartum days. I am known for my warmth, patience, and intuitive ability to learn and guide people in the newness of parenthood.

Whether you find yourself in the midst of labor or navigating the beautiful chaos of life with a newborn, rest assured, I’m here to walk alongside you every step of the way. With my training and hands-on life experience, my aim is to cultivate a safe and nurturing environment where you feel empowered to make decisions that resonate with your unique journey.

Beyond my doula duties, you’ll often find me working on my hobbies and crafts, throwing on my pottery wheel or hanging with my family. I believe in finding joy in life's simple pleasures and cherishing every moment of the journey. I would be deeply honored to accompany you on your path to parenthood, offering unwavering support, guidance, and a sprinkle of joy & laughter along the way!

We couldn’t recommend Jorie-Brae as a doula more! She is so kind, caring, encouraging and knowledgeable. Her heart for new moms and babies will make you love her instantly. We are beyond grateful for her. Having a doula is SO important and vital towards achieving the birth and postpartum you want.

Karen Phippen (she/her), Postpartum doula

Hi, I’m Karen! I'm the mom of 5 incredible kids. I love biking, hiking, running, swimming, and try to incorporate exercise into my daily routine. In between soccer games and track meets, I homeschool my kids and get all the continuing education I can! I completed my training with DONA (Doulas of North America) 13 years ago and have worked as a birth and postpartum doula ever since. I love to support families in the postpartum period. I became an advocate and activist for maternal mental health after experiencing postpartum mood and anxiety disorders with my own children. I’ve been a leader for the Climb Out of the Darkness for the last 5 years which raised thousands of dollars for Postpartum Support International and local postpartum groups. I look forward to supporting you during the perinatal period!

My family hired Karen as a postpartum doula for me, and it was the best gift I’ve ever received. From our very first conversation, it felt like I was talking to a supportive old friend who also happened to be a fountain of knowledge on everything from pregnancy and childbirth to infant care and recommendations on local professionals who specialize in multiples. I’ve never met someone more passionate and enthusiastic about helping new parents, and I cannot recommend her enough!

Kortney Ward (she/her), Birth doula

Hi there, my name is Kortney and I’m a Doulas of North America (DONA) trained birth doula. As a fiercely passionate and empathetic person, the people in my life tend to refer to me as their “hype girl,” and I hope to be that for everyone I meet! In my free time you can find me cuddling my dog (a Pomeranian named Denali), paddle boarding, hiking with my partner, getting coffee with a friend or listening to a good book.

After giving birth to my son at a young age, I knew immediately that I had a passion for the empowering experience of birth. I’m here to hold space, provide continuous support, advocate for and empower the birthing person and their partner. As a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, my work is rooted in inclusivity and empowerment. Every birthing person deserves support, compassion, resources and the most positive birth possible. This is my life’s passion and it would be an honor to be a part of your birth experience. I’m truly grateful to be considered and I can’t wait to meet you!

Lauren Mancuso (she/they), Birth + postpartum doula

Hi there! I’m Lauren and I am a certified birth + postpartum doula through Cornerstone Doula Trainings. I am originally from Los Angeles and moved to Utah this past June with my partner. When I’m not expanding my knowledge about birth work, I am often outside exploring, taking a pottery class or traveling.

I have always been very intuitive and love the signs that the universe sends to me, getting into birth work being one of them! I was called into this work when I heard a woman on social media mention how much doulas, birth workers and healers are so needed, and with the ongoing debate about reproductive rights, I felt like I was called to learn more about being a part of positive change. One of the big factors that led me into this work was also that so often when someone gives birth, it is the baby(s) that most people focus on and forget that the parents need just as much love and care after such a life changing experience. I got on the phone with a doula a few days later who told me about Cornerstone and how their values lined up with mine (culturally aware, no gendered language, highlighting marginalized groups and being trauma informed). I talked to my closest family and friends who were extremely supportive and gave me the push to start my certification, and the rest is history.

My heart has felt so called to this work, and the more I have stepped into my power as a birth worker, the more it feels like this is my purpose. I am so excited to be a part of Heart Tones and am honored to be able to empower your family in this incredible time!

Lilly scott (she/her), birth + postpartum doula

Hi, I’m Lilly! For the past four years, my focus has been on holistic healing and holding space for others through teaching yoga, meditation, practicing energy healing and studying holistic herbalism. My passion for care now extends into doula work where I can bring my experience and expertise in supporting and healing into birth and postpartum work. As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I am passionate about bringing inclusive care to all families and providing resources for community members as they navigate these reproductive experiences.

Nothing lights up my heart more than supporting people through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. Whether through yoga, guided meditations, energy work, or doula support— this is my calling and I am so grateful for this opportunity. When I’m not involved in my many facets of care work, you can find me hiking, camping, gardening, cooking, paddle boarding, making pottery, and enjoying the world with my wife and puppy.

Lilly is a nurturer, she offers genuine care for her clients and that shines through in her work. I can’t recommend her enough!

Lucia Killian (she/her), birth + postpartum doula

Hello! My name is Lucia and I am a certified Birth Doula (DONA) and certified Postpartum Doula (Childbirth International). My passion is connecting with people. When I was a teenager I asked my mom what she thought my 'skills' were to which she replied, "You are a great friend!" Immediately, I moaned, "That won't get me into college!" Many years later, after having a doula at my own birth, I truly started to understand how my passion of finding connection with people could actually turn into a perfect career fit.

The arrival of a new baby is filled with many emotions and new experiences and I absolutely love helping families navigate this transition. I strive to do this by being a solid support throughout pregnancy, labor and postpartum. Whether that comes in the form of a listening ear, providing space and options in decision making, hands on support or suggesting resources in our community, I want to ensure you always feel taken care of. Additionally, I am VBAC Doula through the VBAC Link and PAILAdvocate, supporting families with pregnancy and infant loss. I have supported families as they welcome twins, babies with special needs and couples who have used IVF. In my spare time, I love to hike in the mountains, go camping with my family and enjoy a good yerba mate!

Lucia knew what I wanted before I even did. She helped me to feel at ease and comfortable during all of delivery. I would 100% recommend Lucia and she will be the doula at all my future births.

McKayla Broadhurst (she/her), Postpartum Doula

Hello! I’m McKayla. I’m a postpartum doula, sleep consultant, nanny, and mom. Being the oldest sibling of 4, I’ve known I wanted to work with children for as long as I can remember. I have had an internship as a teachers assistant for children with Autism, worked in daycares, taught preschool, and have spent the last 8+ years as a nanny caring for children from infancy to teenage years.

It wasn’t until I gave birth in 2019 and realized how unprepared I was, and how unfortunately common that is, that I realized my passion was for the early stages of childhood and the postpartum period, specifically. I immediately became hooked to reading and learning about gentle parenting, early stages of child development, and most importantly what this time meant for me as a new parent. As a postpartum doula, I hope to provide families with the knowledge and support I believe every household deserves. I can’t wait to meet you!

I get so much more done when McKayla is here - whether it’s pumping, chores, or even a shower or nap. Her insights and support help me be a better mom.

nancy saperstone (she/her), postpartum doula

Hi there, I’m Nancy - I’m a certified postpartum doula and infant massage instructor and I love all things baby! I recently left a 30-year career in Human Resources to follow my passion working with parents and their infants. As someone who believes strongly in wellbeing, I want to support caregivers as they transition to a new baby in the house by supporting your mental, emotional, and physical health. My experience teaching infant massage further enforces the importance of parents building strong bonds with their baby. After raising three (now grown) children of my own, I understand the challenges parents face and I’m looking to ease the struggles of the first year through empowering parents. I graduated with a M.Ed. in Health Promotion and a B.S. in Human Development, both from Vanderbilt University. I can’t wait to meet you and support you during your postpartum time!
