Working with Heart Tones Birth Services

Hi there!

I’m Beth Hardy, the owner of Heart Tones Birth Services in SLC. I’m happy you found us and are interested in possibly working as a doula with our agency. I want to tell you a bit about who we are, what we value, and what we look for in the doulas who are part of our team.

who we are

Heart Tones Birth Services started in 2015 with just me, Beth. After a few years I got a doula partner, and then in 2022 I launched the agency. I started with 3 doulas and pretty quickly grew to 8, and continue to expand! The nature of doula work is that it ebbs and flows, and often doulas will work for a while and then take some time off as needed. I want to do all I can to make this work sustainable, enjoyable and meaningful for all the Heart Tones doulas.

In addition to the birth and postpartum work we do, we also gather as a team for a monthly mentoring meeting where we talk about topics related to birth, process tough birth experiences, share ideas, and basically just fill our cups. We also have special things throughout the year like dinners, client appreciation picnics, retreats and trainings.

I have been just blown away by the high quality of mentorship, access to continuing education, and high level of professionalism that I’ve gotten working for Heart Tones.

What we value

Here at Heart Tones, we strongly value diversity in the birth world, and we support all birthing people. We get the opportunity to work with a variety of clientele who come from different backgrounds and family structures, and it’s important that all the doulas on the team feel open and excited about working with all sorts of clients.

We use gender neutral language in our materials + website, and reflect the language of our clients once we get to know them and the language they use for themselves and their families. We specialize in working with LGBTQIA+ clients, and also have scholarship and sliding scale opportunities for clients with financial barriers.

As a Heart Tones doula, you’d be expected and encouraged to do the continual work of dismantling the internalized racism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia and fatphobia that are woven into all of us to some degree. This could look like reading books, listening to podcasts, taking trainings, and talking about hard topics in our monthly mentoring meetings.

The love and care that I’ve seen this group of doulas share with each other is next level.

What we’re looking for

The kind of doulas we are looking for:

  • have attended at least 3 births as a birth doula and/or worked with at least 3 postpartum clients as a postpartum doula

  • are outgoing, down to earth, and able to engage easily with new people

  • are able to sit in discomfort with clients and hold space for the client’s emotions and experiences without necessarily trying to fix it

  • are able to engage easily with partners, helping them to see their innate value and power in the birth room

  • are able to prioritize their own wellbeing through personal practices like meditation, movement, therapy, and down time after births to decompress

  • are interested in building community and excited to be part of a team of doulas

  • are interested in continually learning how to be the best doula they can be

  • are able to talk through hard things, take suggestions, and communicate effectively

  • are allies for marginalized birthing people
